Victoria Azarenka retires from first round match at French Open

Tuesday May 24th, 2016

Down 4–0 in the third set to Karin Knapp, Victoria Azarenka retired from her first-round match at the French Open due to injury.

After losing the first set 6–3, Azarenka tweaked her right knee midway through the second, limped to her chair and took a long injury timeout before returning to the match. She then won all three of her break points in the set to force a tiebreak, and forced a third set, 8–6. Her knee continued to bother her throughout.

Azarenka reached the semifinals of the French Open in 2013, and has never reached the final. She was seeking her third Grand Slam victory.
