The PGA Tour’s unofficial “fifth'' major tees off today from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on the historic TPC Sawgrass golf course. While this is not The Masters, the PGA Championship, The U.S. Open or the Open Championships, this tournament carries almost as much prestige as those events on the PGA Tour. Since 2014 there has been a new champion crowned in the Players Championship with only six golfers ever winning this tournament multiple times since it was first played in 1974. Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event and has three total wins, the most all-time. Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Hal Sutton, Steve Elkington and Fred Couples all have two wins a piece.

Over the last 10 years, nine different golfers have won the Players Championship for the first time with one year canceled for the pandemic. Martin Kaymer, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Kim Si-woo, Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Cameron Smith and most recently, Scottie Scheffler have all become first-time winners since Woods won his second.
This years field is stuffed with great golfers that have the potential to come out on top with a win at the Players Championship. The likes of Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, Max Homa and other elite golfers will try to win golf’s unofficial major tournament.
Heading into the Players Championship, Scheffler is the leader in points for the FedEx Cup. This year he already has one win and five top 10 finishes in six tournaments played. He is off to an even better start than he did a few years ago when Scheffler won the regular season before falling just short in the FedEx Cup Championship.
