It will be the 39th edition of the combined men's and women's event and is classified as an ATP Masters 1000 event on the 2024 ATP Tour and a WTA 1000 event on the 2024 WTA Tour. Daniil Medvedev and Petra Kvitová are the defending champions in the men's and women's singles draw, respectively. However, Kvitová did not enter the tournament due to pregnancy, making it the third consecutive year that the reigning women's singles champion pulled out from the tournament.

In the ATP, last season saw 20-year-old Spanish phenom Carlos Alcaraz head into the South Florida Masters 1000 event as the top seed, following his win in the Indian Wells final over Daniil Medvedev.
Alcaraz made it to the semifinal against Jannik Sinner, where the Italian won in three sets to advance to the final against the Russian. In the final, Medvedev beat Sinner in straight sets to hoist the 2023 Miami Open title.
The storyline has started the same exact way this year, with Alcaraz, the top seed in Miami, coming off of a 2024 Indian Wells title over Medvedev heading into the Miami Open.
