CINCINNATI (AP) A University of Cincinnati backup quarterback has been charged with assault for punching a man, police said.

Hamilton County Jail records show 22-year-old Jarred Evans was booked just before 4 a.m. Sunday on a misdemeanor assault charge. Police said Evans knocked a man down with a punch that caused a concussion and cuts requiring stitches. Other details weren't available immediately.

A University of Cincinnati athletics spokesman said in a statement that it would be inappropriate to comment.

''Coach (Tommy) Tuberville is aware of the incident involving Jarred Evans and is in the process of gathering information,'' the UC statement said.

A Hamilton County judge on Monday scheduled a Nov. 4 court appearance for Evans. A message was left for Evans' attorney.

Evans was coming off his best game as a Bearcat. The former Santa Barbara City College player scored his first touchdown and gained 67 yards on 10 carries in the Bearcats' 41-3 victory Saturday at Southern Methodist University. He also completed both passes he threw for 10 yards total.

The Queens, New York, native can be seen in a video from Saturday of former President George W. Bush mingling with Bearcats players in a pregame locker room visit.
