Report: Texas A&M won't name starting QB before game against ULM
Texas A&M will not announce its starting quarterback prior to Saturday's game against Louisiana Monroe, according to Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle.
Sophomore Kenny Hill started the Aggies' first eight games but it is unclear whether he or true freshman Kyle Allen will lead the Aggies against the Warhawks this weekend.
Hill threw for a program-record 511 yards and three interceptions in a season-opening over South Carolina and has recorded 2,649 passing yards and 23 touchdowns against eight interceptions on the season. Over his last three starts -- in losses to Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama -- Hill has thrown six touchdowns and six interceptions.
Allen was rated the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2014 by the recruiting website Rivals.com. He has passed for 264 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions over four games this season in relief of Hill.
Aggies offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said Tuesday that the competition for the starting job is "wide open." From ESPN.com:
"We opened it back up," Spavital said. "It's still wide open. We're going to split the [first-team] reps [Tuesday] and possibly on Wednesday and by Thursday we'll probably have a declared starter and they'll take all the reps for that Thursday practice."
Coach Kevin Sumlin also commented on his team's quarterback situation. "They’ve both gotten reps over the last week and will both continue to get reps. Nothing’s changed from last Tuesday when I said, ‘We’re going to go through this thing just like every other position,’” Sumlin said, according to The Dallas Morning News.
After hosting ULM on Saturday, the Aggies (5-3, 2-3 SEC) face a road game at Auburn and home meetings with Missouri and LSU to close out the regular season.
