Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish play the No. 11 Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday in Tempe. Notre Dame rebounded from its first loss of the season to beat Navy 49-39 last week. Arizona State beat Utah 19-16 to extend its winning streak to four games.

Arizona State

11/1: Arizona State 19, Utah 16

Zane Gonzalez made two field goals in the fourth quarter to lead Arizona State past Utah. Taylor Kelly completed 18 of 32 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Demario Richard ran 14 times for 116 yards, and Jaelen Strong caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Arizona State held Utah to just 241 yards of total offense.

10/25: Arizona State 24, Washington 10

Washington tied the game midway through the fourth quarter, but Arizona State took a seven-point lead on a Taylor Kelly touchdown pass with three minutes remaining. A 61-yard interception return for a touchdown by Armand Perry in the final minute sealed the game. Kelly had missed the team's last three games with a foot injury. 

10/18: Arizona State 26, Stanford 10

Arizona State knocked off then-No. 23 Stanford at home by shutting down the Cardinal offense. The Sun Devils allowed only 288 yards of total offense and recovered two fumbles. Quarterback Mike Bercovici completed 23 of 33 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown in the win.

10/4: Arizona State 38, USC 34

USC held a 34-25 lead with just 3:02 to play, but 17 seconds later, ASU's Mike Bercovici found Cameron Smith for a 73-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 34-32. Arizona State then forced a three-and-out. After a USC punt, Bercovici found Gary Chambers for a 26-yard gain. After a spike stopped the clock, Bercovici threw to the end zone as time ran out and the pass was caught by Jaelen Strong, giving Arizona State the victory. Bercovici finished with 510 passing yards and five touchdowns.

09/25: UCLA 62, Arizona State 27

The Arizona State offense outgained the UCLA offense, 626-580, and held a 17-6 lead early in the second quarter before the Bruins offense took over. Mike Bercovici made the start under center in place of the injured Taylor Kelly and finished with 488 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Wide receiver Jaelen Strong finished the night with 146 yards on 12 catches. 

09/13: Arizona State 38, Colorado 24

Junior running back D.J. Foster ran for 147 yards and a touchdown. Three different wide receivers caught touchdowns from quarterback Taylor Kelly, who finished the game with 195 passing yards. The Sun Devils' defense forced three turnovers for the second straight game.

09/06: Arizona State 58, New Mexico 23

Arizona State forced three turnovers and held New Mexico to just 337 yards of total offense. D.J. Foster ran for 216 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Sun Devils finished the game with 423 rushing yards and six touchdowns as a team.

08/28: Weber State 14, Arizona State 45

D.J. Foster paced the Sun Devils offense with 147 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and wide receiver Jaelen Strong hauled in 10 catches for 146 yards. Arizona State outgained Weber State 570-380.

Notre Dame

11/1: Notre Dame 49, Navy 39

Notre Dame came back from a 31-28 third quarter deficit to beat Navy. Everett Golson completed 18 of 25 passes for 315 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing for three touchdowns. Tarean Folston had 20 carries for 149 rushing yards and a touchdown. Notre Dame managed to win despite allowing 336 rushing yards, including 138 to Noah Copeland.

10/18: Notre Dame 27, Florida State 31

The Irish dropped their first game of the season in a close loss to Florida State. A controversial pass interference call wiped a potential game-winning touchdown for Notre Dame off the board in the final seconds to seal the win for the Seminoles. Everett Golson threw for three touchdowns and two interceptions across 313 yards. 

10/11: North Carolina 43, Notre Dame 50

Notre Dame narrowly escaped what could have been its first loss of the season in this shootout. The Irish fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but staged a comeback to avoid the upset. QB Everett Golson threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns, and William Fuller had 133 yards on seven catches with two scores. 

10/4: Stanford 14, Notre Dame 17

Notre Dame won on Everett Golson’s 23-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Koyack with 1:01 remaining. Golson finished with 241 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the victory. The win marked the second time in three seasons that the Irish started 5-0. 

9/27: Notre Dame 31, Syracuse 15

The Fighting Irish scored at least 30 points for the fourth straight game. Everett Golson completed 25 consecutive passes in the second and third quarters, falling one short of the FBS record set by Dominique Davis of East Carolina in 2011. Golson’s streak broke the school record of 14 set by Ron Powlus in 1997 and matched by both Brady Quinn in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl and Tommy Rees in 2011.

9/13: Purdue 14, Notre Dame 30

The Irish improved to 6-0 in Shamrock Series games. Notre Dame is now 6-2 all-time playing in Indianapolis, though the victory over Purdue was its first win there since beating Butler in 1922. Kyle Brindza’s 49th career field goal, a 19-yarder in the second quarter, moved him into second place in school history, trailing only John Carney’s 51 from 1984-86.

9/6: Michigan 0, Notre Dame 31

The 31-point win was the Fighting Irish’s largest in the series against the Wolverines, and it came in the teams' final scheduled meeting. The previous mark was a 23-point win in 1943. This was the first time Notre Dame shut out Michigan in 42 meetings. The Irish did not commit a turnover, improving to 15-0 under coach Brian Kelly when playing turnover-free.

8/30: Rice 17, Notre Dame 48

The 48 points for the Fighting Irish were their most in a home opener since 1999 against Kansas. It was Notre Dame’s 100th home opener victory, and the program is now 100-20-5 all-time in such games. Everett Golson’s three rushing touchdowns tied a Notre Dame record for a quarterback, matching Paul Hornung against North Carolina in 1956 and Jarious Jackson against Stanford in 1998.
