Florida wins 2nd straight, beats Vanderbilt 34-10

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Kelvin Taylor ran for a touchdown and Treon Harris threw for 215 yards and ran for two scores himself as the Florida Gators beat Vanderbilt 34-10 on Saturday night for their second straight win.

Florida (5-3, 4-3) still must beat South Carolina and needs help in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division. But the Gators kept their hopes alive for the East title while getting revenge against Vanderbilt for beating them last year on their own field for the first time since 1945. Florida has won 12 straight against the Commodores on their own field since its last loss here in 1988.

The Gators scored 24 straight points in taking control and also turned four turnovers into 13 points.

With the loss, the Commodores (3-7, 0-6) snapped both a string of three straight bowl seasons and a 10-game winning streak in November.

Florida threw only six passes in beating Georgia last week to ease Harris into his first start. Coach Will Muschamp let the freshman throw on the Gators' first play of the game, and Harris completed seven of his first eight passes before finishing 13 of 21. He connected with Quinton Dunbar on a 60-yarder late in the third quarter and also had a 48-yarder to Ahmad Fulwood.

Harris also ran 10 times for 49 yards, and padded the lead by running for a 7-yard TD and a 33-yarder in the second half.

The Gators outgained Vanderbilt 429-308 and held the ball for 35 minutes, 1 second.

Vanderbilt took advantage of a couple Florida penalties, including a personal foul on Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison, to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The play after Morrison's penalty, Johnny McCrary threw a 33-yard TD pass to Steven Scheu with Dante Fowler Jr. in the quarterback's face.

Taylor tied it up with a 13-yard TD run where he escaped a couple would-be tackles late in the first quarter, and the Gators took over in the second quarter when they came up with the two fumbles and held the Commodores to 16 yards of offense.

Florida ran for 418 yards last week against Georgia but could not score from 3 yards out with four cracks at the goal line in the second quarter. Vanderbilt stopped Matt Jones on the first two downs, then stood up Jeff Driskel on third down before Vanderbilt linebacker Zach Cunningham sliced in to stop Jones short again on fourth down.

Webb ran for 67 yards in the first quarter in passing Kwane Doster for most yards rushing by a Vandy freshman. Webb only had six more carries for 16 yards after that as the Gators smothered the run.

He fumbled after the goal-line stop, giving the Gators first-and-goal once again at the Vanderbilt 9. This time, Driskel went over the top for a 1-yard TD plunge on fourth down and a 14-7 lead, a score that stood after review even though it appeared on replays that Driskel never got the ball to the goal line.

Webb was stripped at the end of his next carry by Morrison, and cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III recovered. Florida had to settle for a 40-yard field goal by Frankie Velez.
