Ex-Texas football players indicted on sexual assault charges
Former Texas football players Montrel Meander and Kendall Sanders have been indicted by a Travis Country grand jury on sexual assault charges, according to the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE.
Meander and Sanders were each charged with sexual assault. Sanders also faces an additional charge of improper photography. According to the Statesman, Meander is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday and Sanders is due on Jan. 23. The charges carry prison terms of two to 20 years.
The alleged incident occurred in the early morning of June 21 at an on-campus dormitory. A female student accused Meander, 19, and Sanders, 20, of sexually assaulting her the night before after the three returned together from a night out.
The players were suspended indefinitely by Texas coach Charlie Strong after their arrest and later dismissed from the program in August. Strong also released a statement after Meander and Sanders were charged in July.
"It's been made clear to everyone on our team that treating women with respect is one of our core values, and I'm extremely disappointed that two young men in our program have been accused of not doing that."
Sanders, a junior wide receiver from Athens, Texas, started seven games in 2013 and caught 37 passes for 361 yards. He was suspended for the 2013 season opener after being charged with DWI in April 2013. Meander, a sophomore wide receiver from Amarillo, Texas, redshirted in 2013 as a freshman.
