Toledo coach Matt Campbell signs extension through 2020
Toledo football coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a new contract extension through 2020, the school announced Monday.
Campbell, 35, is in his third full season with the Rockets. Since taking over for the 2011 Military Bowl, Campbell has went 25-13 at Toledo. This season, the Rockets are 8-4 (7-1 Mid-American Conference) and headed for the GoDaddy Bowl vs. Arkansas State on Jan. 4. They split the MAC West Division title with Northern Illinois, which earned the conference championship game berth by way of the head-to-head tie-breaker.
“I’m honored to be the head football coach at this great University, and grateful for the support of Interim President Nagi Naganathan, Mike O’Brien, and the entire UT administrative staff,” Campbell said. “I’m also very thankful for our players, assistant coaches and football support staff. Their effort and enthusiasm are the real reason behind the great success we’ve had since I’ve been involved with the UT football program.”

According to Nicholas Piotrowicz of The Toledo Blade, Campbell's previous contract ran through 2017 with $285,000 in base pay and $125,000 in marketing compensation, plus various academic and achievement bonuses. Western Michigan made P.J. Fleck the highest-paid MAC coach last week with an $800,000 base salary after a six-year extension.
Financial teams of Campbell's new deal were not immediately available.
Campbell had been connected to the vacant heading coaching job at Pitt, which lost Paul Chryst to Wisconsin last week.

“Matt Campbell is a proven winner and one of the finest head coaches in all of college football,” UT vice president and athletic director Mike O’Brien said in a statement. “Just as importantly, Matt is a great mentor to the young men in our football program. He is dedicated to ensuring that our student-athletes develop on the football field, in the classroom and in life. We are pleased to make this commitment to Matt and look forward to many more years with him as our head football coach.”
