Source: Texas State's Jason Washington to join Houston staff
Texas State secondary coach Jason Washington is expected to join new Houston coach Tom Herman’s staff per a source.
It’s a reunion for Herman and Washington, who previously coached together at Texas State and Rice. Herman was offensive coordinator at Texas State from 2005-06, the final two of Washington’s three years as cornerbacks coach for the Bobcats.
The two also coached at Rice together in 2007. Herman stayed for two years before accepting the offensive coordinator job at Iowa State while Washington stayed for two additional seasons before returning to Texas State to coach cornerbacks.

This past season was Washington’s first season coaching the entire secondary for the Bobcats, which had a 7-5 record and were bowl-eligible for the second consecutive season. Texas State was ranked 34th in the FBS in interceptions and second-best in the Sun Belt with 13.
A San Antonio product, the 35-year-old Washington played defensive back at Texas State from 1998-01.
Houston hired Herman, who remains Ohio State’s offensive coordinator for the inaugural College Football Playoff, earlier this month to replace fired coach Tony Levine. Herman won the Broyles Award this season as the nation's top assistant. His dynamic spread-option offenses at Ohio State have been among the nation’s best, breaking numerous school records.
Nationally, his unit is fourth this season in scoring offense (45.2 points per game) and eighth in total offense (507.6 yards per game) despite losing starting quarterback Braxton Miller in the preseason and J.T. Barrett in November.
