Ex-Jags RBs coach Terry Richardson accepts same position at Maryland
Former Jacksonville Jaguars running backs coach Terry Richardson has accepted the same position at Maryland, according to sources.
It’s a move that reunites Richardson and Terrapins coach Randy Edsall. Their relationship dates to 1990, when Richardson was a freshman running back at Syracuse and Edsall was in his final season as the Orange’s defensive backs coach.
When Edsall became head coach of Connecticut in late 1998, he hired Richardson as his running backs coach, a position he held for 12 years. During his tenure with the Huskies, Richardson coached eventual NFL running backs Donald Brown and Jordan Todman.

The 43-year-old Richardson succeeds Andre Powell, who left last month to become Pittsburgh’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator, the same positions he held at Maryland. Richardson is expected to further help offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Locksley bolster the Terrapins’ recruiting efforts, especially in Richardson’s native Florida.
Richardson was let go as running backs coach for the Jaguars last month after two seasons. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as Miami's running backs coach and Florida recruiting coordinator.
While with the Hurricanes, Richardson coached future NFL running back Lamar Miller and reeled in record-setting running back Duke Johnson, who could be selected within the first three rounds of this spring’s NFL draft.

Richardson had stints with four different NFL teams after he played running back at Syracuse from 1990-94. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product got his start in coaching in 1998 at Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla., as offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
Maryland had a 7-6 record this past season in its Big Ten debut under Edsall, who has a 20-30 record in his four seasons at the school. The Terrapins return a combined nine offensive and defensive starters next season but will be without star wide receiver StefonDiggs, who left early for the NFL draft.
