Mike Bobo's first class at Colorado State a small one

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) Mike Bobo offered no apologies while introducing the small Colorado State recruiting class Wednesday and peeking ahead to next year and beyond.

The Rams signed 13 in Bobo's initial class after he replaced Jim McElwain, who left for Florida after returning the Colorado State program to prominence in his three seasons.

''We had eight or nine committed when I took the job and we didn't lose any of them,'' Bobo said. ''This is the start of us building on what we have, but I am already on the phone for the classes of 2016 and 2017.''

Bobo, who had been the offensive coordinator at Georgia, brings in 10 high school recruits, two junior college players and one transfer.

''It was not a big class. It was extremely tough because of the extended dead period this year that we had because of the new college football playoff format where we didn't get out on the road until Jan. 15 or a little over two weeks,'' said Bobo. ''This is the first step today of building on what we had.''

Bobo stuck with his promise of signing in-state talent. Among the six Coloradoans, offensive linemen Salofi Gaoa and linebacker Max McDonald prepped a few blocks from the Rams practice fields. McDonald was a state discus and shot put champion.

Isaiah Matthews, a versatile athlete from Enterprise High School in Redding, California, tops the recruiting class. He set a school record with a 374-yard rushing performance and could be the next in a long line of notable Rams running backs.

''Isaiah was the guy from Day 1 that we targeted,'' Bobo said. ''He's a big strong back with good speed and the ability to break tackles.''
