Iowa State says DL Meyers has cancer

AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State defensive lineman Mitchell Meyers has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, coach Paul Rhoads said Thursday.

Meyers will begin treatment that includes chemotherapy on Friday.

Team physician Dr. Marc Shulman said the cure rate for Hodgkin's lymphoma is 90 percent. He added that because Meyers is in excellent overall shape, it may help his prognosis.

''Mitchell's immediate health is our most important concern right now,'' Rhoads said. ''I have no doubt that Mitchell will attack this with a positive mindset and strong determination.''

Meyers, who grew up in Texas, said in a statement released by Iowa State that he's receiving his treatment in Ames so he can stay in school. Meyers' treatment is expected to last at least four months.

Meyers, a sophomore, was one of four Cyclones to start all 12 games last season.

He had 30 tackles and was a first-team Academic All-Big 12 pick for the second year in a row.

''I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement I have received. I am determined to embrace the process and fight this with a positive attitude,'' Meyers said. ''I have the greatest teammates in the world. It's been humbling to see their care and words of encouragement. I would love to be able to play football at Iowa State again, but right now my focus is on my health.''
