Michael Brewer throws TD pass in Virginia Tech spring game

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Michael Brewer threw a touchdown pass, and Travon McMillian, Trey Edmunds and J.C. Coleman each scored on short runs to lead Team Medal of Honor to a 24-21 victory in Virginia Tech's spring game on a rainy Saturday.

''We've really had a good spring practice,'' Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. ''I think we've got a lot of good character guys and a lot of good football players. I like where we are right now and we've got to keep going in a positive direction.''

Greg Stroman scored on an 88-yard punt return for Team Pylon, which had two first-half turnovers. Punter Mitchell Ludwig was tackled at the 17 before getting off a punt, and that led to McMillian's 4-yard touchdown run at Lane Stadium.

Trailing 24-7 at halftime, Team Pylon scored twice in the second half - on a 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Donovan Riley and on Coleman's 2-yard run.

Brewer completed 4 of 8 passes for 60 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Ford.

The Hokies picked the team names to honor the school's military tradition.

BREWER ENDS STRONG: Brewer's performance capped a strong spring. After throwing 15 interceptions last spring, he didn't throw an interception in the Hokies' three scrimmages or spring game.

''It's been a big point of emphasis,'' Brewer said. ''That was something we needed to improve upon last year, and I think we've done a good job of that this spring.''

REAVIS ON CHART: Virginia Tech has needs at free safety and rover. The coaches may have found a rover, with sophomore C.J. Reavis was listed as No. 1 on the depth chart. Reavis finished the spring game with a team-high seven tackles, including the one of the punter, which led to a score.

''He's got a chance to be really good,'' Beamer said. ''I want him to continue to mature and be an all-the-time guy, and I think he will. I think he's going in that direction. He's going in a great direction on the field, and off the field, I think he's going to follow in the same way.''

HANSEN SCHOLARSHIP: Right tackle Wade Hansen came to Virginia Tech as a walk-on after transferring from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a Division III school, in 2013. This past week, he earned a scholarship after winning the starting job.

''I'm open to the troubles of not having a scholarship because he's my friend,'' left guard Wyatt Teller said. ''He's a great kid, and he does what's asked. He did everything, and he got a scholarship. I'm really happy for him.''

MIHOTA MOST IMPROVED: Defensive lineman Vinny Mihota was named the unit's most improved player this spring. Mihota, a rising redshirt freshman, worked his way into a reserve role and possesses the versatility to play either defensive end or tackle.

''I feel I can play left side, right side, left hand down, right hand down, d-tackle, d-end,'' he said.

Then he added, joking, ''Maybe a little safety here and there.''
