Domestic violence charges against Alabama CB Cyrus Jones dropped
Domestic violence charges against Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones have been dismissed, the Tuscaloosa Police Department said on Friday.
Jones was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with one count of domestic violence/harassment and one count of domestic violence/criminal mischief. Both charges are both Class A misdemeanors and each count carries a $500 bond.
Jones took and damaged the cell phone of the alleged victim, according to Tuscaloosa police.
"Although sufficient probable cause existed for both offenses, the dismissal is based on the fact that Mr. Jones in fact attempted to deescalate the situation by contacting the Tuscaloosa Police Department," police said Friday.
Jones is the fifth player associated with the Alabama program to be arrested this offseason.
Alabama safety Geno Smith (driving under the influence), running back Tyren Jones (marijuana possession) and defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor (domestic violence) were also arrested this spring. Jones and Taylor were kicked off the team.
Alabama junior outside linebacker Ryan Anderson was also arrested in January on misdemeanor third-degree domestic violence and criminal mischief charges after authorities said that Anderson kicked a woman's car during an argument.
Jones played in all 14 games last season, tying for the team lead with three interceptions.
Jones, a second-team All-SEC selection in 2014, had 46 total tackles, one fumble recovery and also led the team with 13 pass breakups and 16 passes defended.
