Ex-Oklahoma star: OU has ‘double-standard’ for disciplining athletes
In a Facebook post published Tuesday, former Oklahoma All-America defensive tackle Tony Casillas was critical of the way his alma mater handled running back Joe Mixon’s assault case.
Mixon, the top running back recruit in his class, was suspended for all of last season after he accepted a plea bargain for allegedly assaulting a female student at a restaurant near campus last July. He rejoined the team for spring practice.
Casillas questioned why Mixon was given a second chance while the Oklahoma fraternity brothers who were filmed singing a racist chant were quickly expelled from the school.
Casillas tied Mixon’s case to the recent release of a video showing Florida State quarterback De'Andre Johnson punching a woman. Johnson was dismissed by FSU the same day as the video was released.
Video also exists of Mixon’s incident but has not been released publicly. Members of the media were allowed to view the video in September and report what they saw.
“Mixon wound his arm to the side before punching [the victim] across the face,” KOCO 5 News reported. “[The victim] fell to the floor, where she lay for about 40 seconds... [The victim] was wobbly but managed to get back in her seat. Blood was rushing from her mouth.”
