Memphis CBs coach Troy Reffett joins North Texas as assistant head coach
Memphis cornerbacks coach Troy Reffett is the new assistant head coach and safeties coach for North Texas coach Seth Littrell, according to a source.
This season was Reffett’s first with Memphis after spending the previous six seasons as Louisiana-Monroe’s defensive coordinator. During that span, his defenses were among the best in the Sun Belt. Before that, Reffett was an assistant at New Mexico from 2004-08, initially coaching cornerbacks before being promoted to defensive coordinator his final season. He was a full-time assistant at Texas-El Paso from 1993 through 2003.
He was the program’s outside linebackers coach his first four seasons, moved to defensive backs coach the next five years and spent his last two seasons as defensive coordinator and secondary coach. An El Paso, Texas product, he got his start in coaching as graduate assistant for UTEP from 1990-92 after five years as a defensive back for the Miners.

Reffett joins Littrell, who was hired last month and is regarded as one of college football’s brightest young offensive minds. This past season was Littrell's second as assistant head coach for offense and tight ends coach at North Carolina.
Under him, the Tar Heels had one of the nation's most prolific offenses this season with their fast-paced spread attack. The 37-year-old Littrell replaces former North Texas coach Dan McCarney who was fired in October amidst an 0-5 start.
McCarney had a 22-32 record in his five seasons with the Mean Green. They finished with a 1-11 record this season, including a 1-7 mark in Conference USA, and were among the nation’s worst offensively.
