The Alabama basketball team is preparing for the postseason as they'll open SEC Tournament play on Friday. On Tuesday one of the Crimson Tide's best players was recognized for his strong season as The Sporting News announced its All-American Team.
Senior guard Mark Sears one of four Southeastern Conference players to earn recognition as an All-American as he was selected to the Second Team. He joins Tennessee's Dalton Knecht, who made First Team, Kentucky's Antonio Reeves and Auburn's Johni Brome, who made Third Team.
Sears is a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award as one of the five best point guards in college basketball. He finished second in the SEC in scoring, filling it up all year to a tune of 21.1 points per game. He's scored 20-points or more in 21 games this year all while averaging 4.1 assists per game.
The Crimson Tide were picked to finish fifth in the conference before the year started but Sears's strong play helped Alabama finish third in the league with a 21-10 (13-5) record.
He's not only scored at a high rate, but he's done it efficiently as Sears is shooting 44-percent from beyond the arc, 50-percent from the field and 86-percent from the free-throw line.
The Sporting News is one of four selecting organizations that determine consensus All-American status along with the Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Sears earns two points towards consensus status for earning Second Team.
