CINCINNATI — Memphis star freshman Emoni Bates's status for Thursday's game against Cincinnati is up in the air. According to Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, Bates is not playing on Thursday.

ESPN's Jeff Borzello talked to the star's father, Elgin, who said Bates is questionable to play Thursday as he sees a doctor about an ailing back.

"He has an appointment to see a specialist back home about his back," Elgin Bates said. "He's been having pain the past three weeks, and we're going to figure out what's going on."

Bates was the No. 3 prospect in the 2021 ESPN 100 and just turned 18 recently, meaning he isn't eligible for the NBA Draft until 2023, where ESPN has him going off the board with the 20th pick.

Bates put up 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists against UC in the team's first meeting earlier this month. The freshman is averaging 10.4 points and 3.6 rebounds this season.

Cincinnati faces Memphis for the second time this season on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
