College Football Playoff Staying at Four Teams Through 2025
CINCINNATI — Don't expect the College Football Playoff to expand anytime soon. CFP executive director Bill Hancock confirmed that the current four-team playoff structure is staying put through the end of the CFP's TV deal with ESPN, which expires after the 2025 season.
That means Cincinnati will likely have to keep running the table to get into the CFP. They'll get some breathing room when they enter the Big 12 in 2023 or 2024, but even then, more than one loss would be hard to overcome in a four-team field.
The major conference commissioners didn't make any headway over the past few months and decided to punt the new plan until 2025. Cincinnati currently faces just one projected Top-25 opponent to start 2022 (Arkansas) after the AAC did not schedule them to play Houston this fall.
