Deion Sanders Details Colorado Buffaloes' Transfer Portal Plan, Needs

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders was not shy when talking about his roster's needs in the spring transfer window on Thursday. According to Sanders, the Buffaloes are targeting "every area" in order to improve the team before the regular season.

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders spoke to the media after Thursday's spring practice, and his availability coincided with the opening of the spring transfer portal window. The Buffaloes have already been active in the transfer portal, landing commitments from former Campbell wide receiver Sincere Brown and Memphis offensive lineman Xavier Hill.

According to Sanders himself, Colorado is not done adding impact players to the roster in the spring. Both Hill and Brown are expected to make immediate contributions upon their arrival with the Buffaloes. Are Sanders and his coaching staff targeting specific positions for future additions?

"I want to target every area," Sanders said on Thursday. "You don't just sit back and think you got it, you know? I mean, I think the kicking game is set. . . long snappers as well as kickers and punters, we straight. Everything else is, we need to improve."

While the Colorado coach claims his roster needs improvement, Sanders could also be attempting to motivate the current Buffaloes as they reach the end of spring practice. Obviously, Sanders and the Buffaloes are unlikely to add a quarterback in the spring transfer portal window with quarterbacks Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis competing for the starting job.

Still, Sanders talked about the difficulty of evaluating his own team after practicing against each other for the last few weeks.

"I don't know how you assess spring. You're practicing against yourself. So, if you're doing good, what does that say? If you're doing bad, what does that say? So you can't really assess that. That's why I wanted the spring game against somebody else, so you could kind of assess talent, you can assess coaching, you could assess growth, adversity," said Sanders. "So it's kind of tough to really assess talent and assess what you want to see. I know what I like to see. I don't see that every day. I saw it today. Had a great practice today, I feel."

A few Buffaloes have announced their intentions to transfer, like running back Isaiah Augustave, safety Savion Riley, and wide receiver Adrian Wilson. Will Colorado add a running back, or another wide receiver, or a defensive back through the portal?

Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported that former Auburn safety Terrance Love is visiting Colorado over the weekend, and the Buffaloes are expected to host a number of high school and transfer recruits for the spring game.

How does Sanders go about convincing said recruits to commit to Colorado? As expected, the Buffaloes coach is confident in his program, and Sanders thinks Colorado speaks for itself.

"I don't think I have to explain 'Why Colorado?' I think they see that on an everyday basis. Why Colorado? I don't think I have to sit up there and sell us to anybody. I think by the time they get here, they're looking for confirmation. Our program sells itself. . . . We do a great job of really exposing our program. We did a great job on pro day," said Sanders.

The portal officially opened on Wednesday and will remain open until April 25. Players do not have to commit to a school by April 25, but they must enter the portal before then in order to be eligible for the 2025 season.
