Final Georgia Tech Football Depth Chart Projection As Fall Camp Concludes

Here is the final depth chart projection for the Yellow Jackets as fall camp wraps up

Georgia Tech has wrapped up fall camp and will begin preparation for its season opener against Colorado. The Yellow Jackets have been going through a number of position battles to settle their opening lineup before the first snap against the Buffaloes, but the identity of this team is not going to change. Georgia Tech is going to be a physical football team that wants to control the tempo and play each game on their terms, which could lead to success.

With fall camp wrapped up, here is my best (and last) educated guess at what the depth chart might look like for the Yellow Jackets.

Offense

Quarterback

Starter- Alberto Mendoza
Backup: Grady Adamson or Graham Knowles

Mendoza has settled in nicely as the starter for the Yellow Jackets and is going to take the first snaps on Sept. 3rd. The more interesting thing might be who backs up Mendoza.

Both Adamson and Knowles have had solid moments throughout camp, but both of them are also inexperienced.

Running Back

Starter: Justice Haynes
Backup: Malachi Hosley

No changes here. These will be the top two backs, but keep an eye on J.P Powell and Trelain Maddox. Maddox has had an excellent camp and provides a certain running style and physicality that nobody else on the roster has.

This is a deep unit and one of the best groups of running backs in the country.

Wide Receivers

Starters: Isaiah Fuhrmann, Jordan Allen, and Dalen Penson
Backups: Debron Gatling, Jaiven Plummer, Coi Jean-Noel

This is the position that I am watching closely and feel the least confident about projecting as far as depth goes. What I think has happened is that Allen, Fuhrmann, and Penson have had a great camp and should be at the top of the rotation.

Gatling seems to have made process heading into his second year with the program and Plummer years of experience after coming in from Cal. Of the four true freshmen, Jean-Noel has played the best and I think he can find a way on the field. Keep an eye on Darnell Collins and Kentrell Davis.

Tight End

Starters: Kevin Roche Jr, or Chris Corbo, or Spencer Mermans, or Gavin Harris

Instead of picking just one starter, I can tell you that Georgia Tech is going to use all of these players.

Roche Jr has had a great spring and great fall, Corbo has flashed over the course of camp, and Mermans should be one of the best blocking tight ends in the ACC. Keep an eye on freshman Nathan Agyeman to possibly push for playing time later this season.

Offensive Line

Starters: Ethan Mackenny, Kevin Peay Jr, Joseph Ionata, Malachi Carney, and Jameson Riggs
Backups: Jordan Floyd, Courtney Heard, Courtlin Heard, Will Reed, and Markell Samuel

I think this is going to be the offensive line for the Yellow Jackets against Colorado. Mackenny, Peay Jr, and Ionata are going to be locked into spots. Carney is battling Samuel for the right guard positoin and the loser of that battle (in this case Samuel) could slide out to right tackle or be a backup.

Every offensive line in the country has questions about their depth and Georgia Tech is no different.

Defense

Defensive Line

Starters: Noah Carter, Tawfiq Thomas, Christian Garrett, and Jordan Walker
Backups: Amontrae Bradford, Vincent Carroll-Jackson, Christian Speakman, and Andre Fuller Jr

There is one change that I made from my last projection and that is putting Garrett in the starting lineup. He has had a great camp and projects to have a big role up front for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech feels they are deeper along the defensive line. They are going to get a chance to prove it.

Linebacker

Starters: Kyle Efford and E.J. Lightsey
Backups: Braylon Outlaw, Cayman Spaulding, or Melvin Jordan IV

Efford and Lightsey are set to be the starters for Georgia Tech as two of the leaders of the defense. The buzz during fall camp has been on Braylon Outlaw and I think that he is going to have a role to play on this defense.

Cornerback

Starters: Jaylen Mbakwe, Jonas Duclona, and Daiquan White
Backups: Zachary Tobe, Kelvin Hill, and Jon Mitchell

Mbakwe and Duclona should be two instant impact players for the Yellow Jackets. Daiquan White has gotten considerable buzz (no pun intended) during camp and should see plenty of snaps this season

Keep an eye on freshmen Jaedyn Terry and Trae Stevenson Jr.

Safety

Starters: Tae Harris and Savion Riley
Backups: Fenix Felton and Kealan Jones or Chris Hewitt Jr

I feel confident in say that Harris, Riley, and Felton are the top three safeties entering the season, but some freshmen are going to have to emerge for depth. Hewitt Jr and Jones have continued to impress and should see snaps this season.
