Is Keba Keita the Missing Link for 2026-27 Kansas Basketball Roster?

In this story:
It is already late August, but the Kansas basketball program is still trying to navigate its uncertain big man situation for the upcoming season. With the recent NCAA eligibility changes, there is hope that Bill Self can add one more player to supplement the frontcourt rotation.
KU was initially targeting former Michigan State star Jaxon Kohler in the portal. That plan fell through when he committed to BYU. But as we've written about at Kansas on SI, this could lead to a shift in strategy for the Jayhawks.
Keba Keita remains in the mix for KU and would be a strong addition to round out the team's center lineup. The high-motor big man could be the missing piece for this new-look Kansas squad.
The Jayhawks acquired Charleston transfer Christian Reeves in the offseason, yet they did not expect him to potentially miss significant time due to the lingering effects of a shoulder injury he played through last season. He underwent labrum surgery in May and is currently going through the rehab process.
There was already some uncertainty about how he'd perform as the full-time starter before his injury was announced, giving the coaching staff even more reason to search for another center. Right now, Keita is currently eligible under the state of California's TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) against the NCAA.

By no means would Keita immediately slot in as the starter, especially this late in the offseason, but he'd certainly become the favorite for the role. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Mali native is a relentless rebounder and shot blocker.
This past season with the Cougars, Keita averaged 7.2 rebounds and a career-high 1.8 blocks across 33 games. He doesn't let his shorter stature for the average center hurt him, as his incredible vertical and energy allow him to win most 50-50 balls.
The only downside to Keita's game is his limited offensive ability, but the Jayhawks wouldn't need him to do more than catch the occasional alley-oop and run the fast break. There are already plenty of shot creators and standouts like Tyran Stokes, Leroy Blyden Jr., and others who can generate offensive opportunities.
Keita makes his presence felt on the glass and in the paint as a defender. His addition would also push Reeves and fellow center competitor Paul Mbiya to improve as they battle for minutes.
If there's one move KU should make this offseason, there's no doubt that taking Keita away from BYU would be one of its best options. He could transform the Jayhawks into a legitimate championship contender by helping solve their frontcourt concerns.
