Notre Dame Recruiting Roundup - August 21st

In this story:
Football is originally back. It’s a game week for Notre Dame, which is a welcomed return for a long off-season. As is always the case, there was plenty of recruiting news to keep everyone’s attention.
Let’s take a look at all the news, including a decommitment, visit updates and a lot of week zero action. Here’s everything to know in the world of Notre Dame recruiting.
LATEST RECRUITING NEWS
Here is the latest in Notre Dame recruiting.
Unfortunately there was some bad news in the Notre Dame recruiting world this past week. Elite 2025 Washington (Okla.) High School tight end Nate Roberts opted to reopen his recruitment. He was committed to the Irish for just two months.
In much better news, Notre Dame is going to be hosts for one of the top targets on the 2025 board in Waukesha (Wisc.) Catholic Memorial offensive lineman Owen Strebig. The 6-8, 290-pound offensive tackle will be making the trip back to South Bend for the Ohio State game, his fourth so far.
RECRUITING INTERVIEWS
Here are the most recent interviews with key Irish commits and targets.
With Strebig returning to Notre Dame, it’s tough not to feel great about where the Irish are with the Wisconsin native. In a recent interview with Irish Breakdown, Strebig went in depth in his relationship with Notre Dame and previewed his junior campaign.
Standout 2025 Phoenix (Ariz.) Brophy College Prep cornerback Cree Thomas was also nice enough to join the Irish Breakdown Podcast recently. If that school sounds familiar, it is because it is the same school that Irish All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison came out of in the 2022 recruiting class. Morrison has paved the way for Thomas to potentially fit with the Irish.
Thomas also went in depth on his relationship with Notre Dame. Mike Mickens and the staff have been prioritizing the talented cover man early on.
When talking about the most physically impressive defensive lineman in the 2025 recruiting class, Overland Park (Kan.) St. Thomas Aquinas standout Julian “Juju” Marks will always be on the short list. According to his high school coach, 6-7, 265-pound defender has barely tapped his ceiling yet.
There are some great early relationships being developed by Notre Dame in the secondary for the 2025 recruiting class. That includes Upper Marlboro (Md.) St. John’s cornerback Tariq Hayer, who is one of the better cornerbacks in the country. He lists Notre Dame as one of his top schools thus far.
With high school football kicking off this last week, 2024 offensive line commit Peter Jones is itching to get his senior season started. Malvern (Pa.) Prep and Jones have some big expectations in 2023.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN
Here is some more analysis as football starts back up.
Despite some very, very mixed results from safety recruiting in the 2024 class, 2025 is off to a really promising start. If the Irish staff is able to keep momentum, they have a chance to have a massive haul in that cycle with a ton of talented options on the board.
It’s hard not to get excited about the skill position class that Notre Dame has put together in 2024. I went in depth on each player, including growth I wanted to see from each of them as seniors.
Outside of the recruiting sphere, one of the more exciting pieces of news was the Freaks List coming out, which Bruce Feldman from The Athletic puts out every year. This piece highlights some of the best athletes in all of college football, including three Notre Dame football players.
There were several Irish commits who were in action for their first games during week zero. Several players impressed big time in their season debuts.
