Notre Dame Recruiting Roundup - July 2nd

With summer officially upon us, things on the recruiting side really start to heat up tremendously. That is true for Notre Dame, who had an up and down week, especially over the last couple of days.

Let’s review the week in Irish recruiting. There were some excellent, some less than ideal and everything in between. It is an extremely volatile world.

LATEST RECRUITING NEWS

Unfortunately the week didn’t end on the greatest note on Saturday. Notre Dame received a decommitment from 2024 Warner Robins (Ga.) High School wide receiver Isiah Canion, who had been committed to the school for a little over two months. The Georgia native was one of the more gifted athletes in the 2024 recruiting class, leaving a big hole.

Fortunately for the Irish staff, they still have commitments from Illinois native Cam Williams and North Carolina standout Micah Gilbert. Williams especially is one of the elite pass catchers in the nation. They have plenty of time to find a potential fit for that third wide receiver slot.

One of the top remaining targets on the 2024 board for Notre Dame is California linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. The elite defender just concluded his third, and final, official visit to Ohio State. That now moves him into decision making mode after he recapped all three of his official visits this week.

Quarterback recruiting in the 2025 class has been talked about extensively over the last few weeks. With CJ Carr already committed in the 2024 class, the hot name in 2025 has been Mississippi star Deuce Knight.

While Notre Dame is currently a top two school for Knight, Gino Guidugli and the staff has continued to do a lot of work on the class. They have been evaluating a lot of talented signal callers, including Texas standout Kelden Ryan. He does not currently hold an offer from Notre Dame but is a player to watch.

RECRUITING UPDATES

A few weeks ago during the Irish Invasion, 2025 Florida runner Justin Thurman made his first trip to campus. Notre Dame is in a tremendous spot with Thurman, who seems to fit the values that the program stands by to a tee.

The Irish staff is also again making a huge impact on wide receiver recruiting already in the 2025 class. That includes Texas pass catcher Daylan McCutcheon, who has Notre Dame as a top two school for him currently.

Notre Dame is also in a tremendous spot with Las Vegas wide receiver Derek Meadows, who is one of the more physically gifted wide receivers in the class. He would potentially bring a very unique skill set to the class.

The team landed an outstanding early commitment this off-season from 2025 tight end Nate Roberts, who has a great argument as the best tight end in the class. With Notre Dame not being able to land a commitment from Carter Nelson in 2024, there is a need for a second tight end in 2025. Notre Dame is keeping close tabs on Georgia tight end Ryan Ghea, who has been high on the program so far.

There is a great argument that New York offensive tackle Rowan Byrne is the nastiest offensive lineman in the 2025 class. Since being offered a couple of weeks ago, Notre Dame has quickly become the team to beat for Byrne.

During a recent evaluation camp, Notre Dame was host to Virginia defensive lineman Samuel Cohen, who already held an offer from the school. Cohen went in depth on the opportunity to get coached by Notre Dame and his relationship with the program so far.

There were a flurry of positive recruiting updates for 2025 linebackers this past week. That includes IMG Academy star Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, who is the younger brother of former Irish star Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Notre Dame is battling the Florida powers for the talented defender.

Notre Dame is also in a strong early spot with Nebraska standout Christian Jones. While he’s one of the top linebackers in the 2025 class, Jones is also the teammate of Irish 2024 commit Teddy Rezac.

After California linebacker Noah Mikhail was offered by Notre Dame last year, he called the program his “dream school.” Things have heated up since that offer and now the staff will be battling some of the top programs in the country. Still, Notre Dame is standing out well.

It hasn’t been the easiest battle for Notre Dame to make an impact in Mater Dei. One of the elite programs in all of high school football, it’s important for them to occasionally tap into the talent pool. One player who is surprisingly high on Notre Dame early on is 2025 cornerback Chuck McDonald III.

As was the case in the 2024 class, 2025 is yet another important cycle for safety recruiting. One of the top names on the board is Nevada star Matai Tagoa’i. Notre Dame is among the top three schools right now for the jumbo safety.

Speaking of big safeties, North Carolina native JaDon Blair is another defender who has a size profile reminiscent of former Irish star Kyle Hamilton. Notre Dame is putting in a lot of effort on this recruitment. They are trying their absolute best to get Blair up for his first visit to South Bend.

Another player who traveled to campus for an evaluation camp recently was Connecticut standout Ethan Long. Yet another tall safety, the staff sees some similarities with Hamilton as well. Long is very appreciative of that comparison.
