The Max Christie Blog: Quarantine Work Out, Recruitment, Waiting Game and More

Christie is one of the top scoring guards in the country, regardless of class.

Max Christie is an SI All-American nominee and one of the top shooting guards in the country. This season, the 6-foot-5 junior averaged 26 points (43 percent from the 3-point line), 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks a game while leading the Mustangs to their first 20-win season since 1990-91. That production has everyone from Duke to Michigan State to Purdue to Villanova, among many others all giving chase. Now, Christie has agreed to give SI All-American exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a blog.

What’s up world, this is Max Christie and I’m just starting my blog with Sports Illustrated! This is what my life is like on and off the court.

Well, like everyone else around the world I’ve been in quarantine, and I’ve just been staying in shape and getting used to the new normal.

I’ve been putting in a lot of work outside on my goal and doing a lot of running. My dad is my personal trainer and we work out every day. That’s been convenient for me, of course, but it’s been great because I don’t feel like I’m missing too much and staying sharp in this time off.

My recruitment is going as well as it can considering what we’re all going through; I’m not the guy that’s gonna drop a top 10 or top five or anything like that. I will just weigh things out and then I’ll just commit when the time is right for me.

I was hoping to be able to get out to schools and connect with coaches and players in person, but the coronavirus has really slowed things down. I’m just playing it by ear to see how or if things could change in the next couple of months. I feel like this situation is making guys in my class commit a little earlier, but as of now, for me, I’m just gonna take it slow.

I talk to the coaches about what they’ve been up to during the quarantine and what things would be like with their program if we weren’t going through a pandemic. Normal stuff.

The schools that contact me the most are Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State, Duke, Virginia, Northwestern and Villanova.

I really enjoy getting to know the coaches throughout this whole process. It’s even cooler because most of them are even more relaxed because we’re all at home.

Other than that, I’ve been playing a lot more video games and watching a lot more TV during this time. I’m usually traveling a lot with basketball during the spring and summer so it’s different to have all of this free time.

I think the thing I miss the most about AAU is just hanging out with my teammates, competing and going to different hotels and having fun. We go around the country to play the game we love and it’s a lot of fun.

I miss it, but I know this is a serious time right now.

OK, well school is winding down, I only have about two weeks left. It hasn’t been too bad doing the online classes. I miss just being around my friends and teachers and just the normalcy of that routine, but I feel like I made the best of the situation I was in.

OK guys, I’m gonna get out of here right now, but thanks for checking out my blog. Hope to have another one for you guys coming up soon so check back in.

Take care.
