When it comes to first round picks in fantasy baseball, Trea Turner not only provides a very safe and productive floor but also immensely high ceiling. The 26-year-old shortstop is currently coming off draft boards with the ninth overall selection according to the latest Average Draft Position data.
Here’s what Sports Illustrated’s fantasy baseball analyst Shawn Childs wrote about Turner:
“The best of three base stealers is Trea Turner. His skill set is unique while setting a high floor in steals. Turner should add value in runs and batting average… Fantasy owners still haven’t seen the best of him.”
Childs was joined by Ben Heisler and gave some more analysis on drafting Turner in 2020

Corey Parson: Fantasy baseball fans. I'm Corey Parson from SI.com. Getting ready to talk some Washington Nationals and Trea Turner the speedster. Joining me to help break him down is SI's, fantasy and gaming analyst Ben Heisler and Shawn Childs. Shawn, you're in the top box. So I'll start with you. What do you think about Trea Turner coming into the season?

Shawn Childs: He's a guy that has a unique skillset and he's a player that people have a tough time getting their head around because you know, his value is created by his edge in steals, even with a forty-three steals two years ago, thirty-five last year. He still has a guy, a guy that could steal maybe up to, you know, 50, 60, 70 bases in a full season. Obviously, we'll get a lot less than that with what's going on this year. But he can hit close to 300. His power is close to 20 home runs for a full season. RBI rates rising. He just does so many things well, but he just sets up your team in speed and a Roto format, and he's kind of a difference maker. Earlier my fantasy career, I did really, really well with Carl Crawford as a first piece of the puzzle, and he's kind of a similar player and he just hasn't shown that explosiveness in speed. You know, last year he missed six and a half weeks with an injury. So he's the type of guy that's tempting, tempting for me for sure. And he'll go early and draft this year.

Corey Parson:  Went to a throwback. Right there with Carl Crawford. But no, he's definitely was a championship winner. Ben when you look at Trey Turner this season, what do you think?

Ben Heisler: Well, since I'm in the bottom box score, I got to hold down the fort and anchor this video here. I'll say this right now his average draft position is right at nine. So at the tail end of the first round. And I think he's somebody it makes a lot of sense. As Shawn talks about, he's obviously going to steal a ton of basis. His runs scored likely is going to decrease without Anthony Rendon in the lineup. And the dude still young, still twenty-six years old, but he's entering his sixth year in the big leagues. He's just not a speed guy anymore. He's also doing more. He's average. He has the average right around 300. He hit back to back 19 home run season. So I'm buying on Trea Turner. He missed 40 games last year and he still had the same amount of home runs as he had a season ago. So I think right now his average track position is right where it should be. I think he has the opportunity to capitalize, especially this season.

Corey Parson: All right. Thanks a lot, fellas, for all the latest news from the majors and fantasy baseball. Keep it locked right here at SI.com.
