SI High School Athlete of the Month: Connor Bruce
On Wednesday, May 11, Sports Illustrated traveled to Monte Vista High in Danville, Calif., to honor senior catcher Connor Bruce as the SI High School Athlete of the Month for April, presented by the U.S. Marine Corps. Here, he grins for a picture with SSgt Robert Wancea (left) and Capt Melanie Clifton (right).
Connor was honored in front of his classmates at Monte Vista High’s outdoor amphitheater. Pictured from left to right are: SI’s High School Athlete of the Month editor Ali Fenwick; SSgt Robert Wancea of the U.S. Marine Corps; Connor and 13-year MLB veteran Bill Laskey, who spent the bulk of his career pitching for the San Francisco Giants.
Connor was featured in the April 18 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Bill Laskey, now a baseball analyst for Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and KNBR sports radio and an ambassador for the San Francisco Giants, gifted Connor and his family with tickets to a Giants game, where he will be honored on the JumboTron.
Members of the U.S. Marine Corps (from left to right), Capt Melanie Clifton, PFC Jonathan Wright and SSgt Robert Wancea were on hand to conduct a pull-up bar challenge.
SI gave out freebies including water bottles, sunglasses and copies of SI to Monte Vista students.
