Two days after being named AP Player of the Year, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young won the 2021 Heisman Trophy Saturday night. The former Santa Ana Mater Dei quarterback is the third Monarch to win the award given to the nation's most outstanding college football player after John Huarte (Notre Dame) in 1964 and Matt Leinart (USC) in 2004.

Young played high school football for two seasons at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles before enrolling at Mater Dei for his junior and senior seasons. In his high school career, Young threw for 13,250 yards and 152 touchdowns in 52 games. He led Mater Dei to Southern Section and CIF State titles as a junior and after his senior season, Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson called Young "the greatest quarterback in Mater Dei history."
