It's the start of a new year, and several athletes across the state were more than determined to make an early impression.

Deke Thompson, Sand Springs boys basketball

Thompson turned in a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Sandites defeated Ada to win the championship of the East Central Oklahoma Invitational. He also had 25 points earlier in the tournament in a win against Hugo.

Chris Mason, Victory Christian boys basketball

Mason earned MVP honors for the second straight season as the Conquerors won the Skiatook Tournament. He averaged 23 points - 28 coming in their title-game win against Cascia Hall - and 11 boards in their three tournament victories.

Maddi Stewart, Lincoln Christian girls basketball

Stewart was named the MVP of her school's own Winter Classic tournament, as the Lady Bulldogs defeated defending 5A champion Sapulpa in the title game. She also averaged more than 15 points in Lincoln Christian's four wins last week.

Miller Weast, Inola girls basketball

Weast averaged 17.3 points per game in four wins for the Lady Longhorns, including first place at the Locust Grove Tournament, defeating Adair for the championship.

Evan Goodwin, Jenks boys basketball

Goodwin scored 26 points as the Trojans captured the championship of the inaugural Primus Moore Invitational in McAlester with a 64-53 win against Muskogee. He was also named the tournament MVP.

Addison Alexander, Bristow girls basketball

Alexander averaged 25 points and five assists as the Lady Pirates won the Henryetta Tournament, defeating McLoud in the title game.

Valeria Hill, Summit Christian girls basketball

Hill averaged nearly 20 points in three games as the Lady Eagles claimed first place at the Regent Prep Tournament.

Carter RomanNose, El Reno boys basketball

RomanNose averaged 14 points and five rebounds and was named the MVP as he helped the Indians claimed the Anadarko Tournament title.

Roy Henderson, Midwest City boys basketball

Henderson averaged 19.6 points and was named the MVP of the Putnam City Invitational, which was won by the Bombers.

Kori Rainwater, Tahlequah girls basketball

Rainwater earned MVP honors as the Lady Tigers won the Mother Road Classic in Verdigris. She averaged more than 16 points in her team's three wins, including 22 in a 52-45 win against Coweta for the title.

Tucker Shepherd, Perkins-Tryon boys basketball

Shepherd averaged 21 points and eight rebounds as the Demons claimed the championship of the Noble Dental Lodge Classic. He was named the tourney MVP.

De'Yanna Douglas, Midwest City girls basketball

Douglas was named the tournament MVP as the Lady Bombers defeated Ada, 39-27, to win the East Central Oklahoma Classic. She had 15 points in a semifinal win against Ardmore, and earlier this season, became the program's all-time leading rebounder.

Garrett Scott, Pocola boys basketball

Scott was named the MVP of the Kingston Tournament over the weekend. He had 30 points in the Indians' semifinal win against Kingston and had 23 points in the title-game win against Marlow.

Devon Haney, North Rock Creek boys basketball

Haney poured in 40 points to help his team claim the Konawa Tournament title, an 82-63 win against Destiny Christian.

Caya Smith, Putnam City West girls basketball

Smith, a University of Oklahoma signee, scored 17 points as the Lady Patriots won the Putnam City Invitational with a 63-49 win against Norman North. 

DaVohn Hall, Roland boys basketball

Hall scored a team-high 17 points as the Rangers repeated as the champions of the Sequoyah County Area Classic with a 54-40 win against Muldrow. He was also named to the All-Tournament team.

Destin Edwards, Community Christian boys basketball

Edwards averaged 19 points as the Royals took the championship of the Hinton Tournament. He scored 24 points in the title-game win and earned MVP honors.

Leah Bradley, Newcastle girls basketball

Bradley was named the MVP as the Lady Racers claimed the title at the Noble Dental Lodge Classic. In the title game, a 28-25 win against Guthrie, Bradley hit four 3-point baskets.

Aiden Todd, Bethany boys basketball

Todd was named the MVP of the Lincoln Christian Winter Classic, scoring 29 points and making four 3-pointers as the Bronchos edged Sapulpa, 54-51, for the title.

McKenzie Mathurin, Broken Arrow girls basketball

Mathurin averaged 23.2 points and six rebounds per game as the Lady Tigers took first place at the ConocoPhillips/Arvest Invitational in Bartlesville. Broken Arrow defeated Stillwater for the title.

Haven Freeman, Roland girls basketball

Freeman led the Lady Rangers with 14 points as they won the Sequoyah County Area Classic with a 39-25 win against Muldrow. She was also selected to the All-Tournament team.

Hudson Franz, Edmond Memorial boys basketball

A sophomore, Franz averaged 13 points and five assists while taking home MVP honors as the Bulldogs captured the championship at the Bishop McGuinness Classic.

Zander Grigsby, Sand Springs boys wrestling

Grigsby raised his record to 17-0 after winning the 165-pound weight class of the Larry Willkey Invitational in Jenks over the weekend. He earned pinfall wins in the second round, semifinals and finals, getting a pin in the third period while also helping the Sandites claim the team title.

Dixie Holliday, Bethel girls wrestling

Holliday claimed the 105-pound weight class at the Hilldale Invitational.

Kody Routledge, Edmond North boys wrestling

Routledge won the 157-pound weight class at the Geary Invitational. In the finals, he picked up a 4-3 decision against Stillwater's Landyn Sommer, who went undefeated last season and was undefeated entering that match. Routledge's performance also helped the Huskies claim the team championship.
