Coach: Marco van Basten.

World Cup record: Eight appearances, runner-up in 1974, 1978.

Euro 2004: Lost to Portugal in semifinals.

European Championship final tournament record: 14 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses in 28 games over seven tournaments. Champion in 1988.

Top Players: Ruud van Nistelrooy, Edwin van der Sar, WesleySneijder.

Prognosis: The Dutch usually make it through the opening rounds, but with World Cup finalists Italy and France in the same group, things could get tough. Romania, the fourth team in the group, beat the Dutch at home and held them to a 0-0 draw in qualifying.

Coach: Roberto Donadoni.

World Cup record: 16 appearances, champion in 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006.

Euro 2004: Eliminated in first round.

European Championship final tournament record: 10 wins, 10 draws, 3 losses in 23 games over six tournaments. Champion in 1968.

Top Players: Marco Materazzi (pictured above), Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni.

Prognosis: The World Cup champions, who came dangerously close to missing out on the tournament, are good enough to compete for their second straight major title, but losing team captain Fabio Cannavaro a week before the tournament is a major blow.

Top Players:Adrian Mutu, Christian Chivu, Cosmin Contra.

Prognosis: Strong qualifying performances would have made Romania a good bet to advance to the quarterfinals from just about any other group. This group, however, should be too much for it to overcome.

Coach: Raymond Domenech.

World Cup record: 12 appearances, champion in 1998.

Euro 2004: Lost to Greece in quarterfinals.

Overall European Championship record (including qualifying): 67 wins, 29 draws, 21 losses in 117 games.
