Pop Culture Hot List
Sean Avery
Never before has the term "sloppy seconds" elicited so much attention. Maybe NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was simply suspending Sean Avery for being factually inaccurate as Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter have been with more than a couple hockey players and none of them would be described as particularly sloppy, at least on the ice.
O.J. Simpson
It's good to see Nevada has strict sentences for guys going after lost sports memorabilia. Simpson is going to jail for at least the next decade.
Tony Romo
There are three things you can count on this time of year: Christmas music playing in every coffee shop, a Santa Claus knockoff charging for pictures at every mall and Tony Romo getting exposed as an average quarterback. It's literally like the clock hitting midnight with this guy, who goes from being a gunslinger to a guy who fires blanks, or worse -- interceptions.
Bernie Williams
The five-time Yankees All Star signed a recording contract for his sophomore album, Moving Forward, which comes out April 14. "Creating my debut album was a great experience, although my primary focus at that point was still baseball," said Williams, who will perform at New York's Nokia Theater on April 18. "For the past two years, I have been able to fully dedicate my time to music, and I could not be more excited with the results." Now, wouldn't it make more sense if Williams held his concert this week at a Las Vegas lounge during the MLB Winter Meetings?
Ryan Leaf
Finally, someone had the gumption to do a film on the most intriguing player in NFL history -- Ryan Leaf. "Leaf," an 82-minute low-budget hybrid documentary, written and directed by Tim Carr, who also stars as Leaf, premiered to a crowd of about 160 people in the third floor auditorium of the downtown San Diego Library last week. "I insisted it be free for all the Chargers fans because it's their story," Carr said. "I was like, 'Chargers fans have been through enough -- let them have this.' "
Kerri Walsh
Walsh apparently left Beijing with more than just her second Olympic gold medal this summer. She is pregnant with her first child with husband Casey Jennings, a fellow pro beach volleyball player, and is fairly certain of the timeline. "I'm chubby and I'm pregnant and it's awesome!" said Kerri, who is 17 weeks pregnant. "We believe we conceived during our last days in Beijing, or about a couple of days after we won the gold medal."
Alex Rodriguez and Madonna
Despite being spotted with Madonna in New York, Miami and Mexico City, A-Rod said he and the singer are just friends. "We're friends -- that's it," Rodriguez said. "I can tell you this; I have never been on a plane with her." By the way, in celebrityspeak, "just friends" is short for "a couple that isn't ready to go public yet."
NFL in 3D
The NFL aired its first game in 3D last week in three theaters in L.A., Boston and New York, and while no one should be forced to watch the Chargers play the Rams in 1D, 2D or 3D, the technology was a success. There are plans to air the BCS National Championship Game to 150 digital movie theaters in 3-D in January. I'm guessing none of them will be in Austin, Texas.
Pete Carroll
What does Carroll have in common with Britney Spears and Adam Carolla? Well, the unlikely trio helped take part in the first Christmas tree lighting at L.A. Live, the new entertainment complex in downtown. No word if Carroll had any words of wisdom for Spears, who could use some good coaching in her life.
Kevin Costner
The actor is the latest celebrity to work with NASCAR as he's signed a one-year contract with the racing organization and will provide them with personal appearances and music. Wait. What? Music? Yeah, apparently Costner has been working hard with his country-rock band Modern West and the band's latest music video, Backyard, will debut on NASCAR.com next week.
