Americans Abroad: Dempsey scores again, Agbossoumonde team-less

Agbossoumonde, 18, was expected to be a part of Portugal power Sporting Braga this season, but around the time that his loan from U.S. Soccer Federation Division 2 side Miami FC expired, Braga's front office and coaching staff underwent major changes, said U.S. Soccer National Hall of Fame member and former MLS coach Fernando Clavijo, who is currently Miami FC's director of soccer.

Although Agbossoumonde impressed in his time at Braga, he became a casualty of the personnel overturn and the team declined its option to buy him outright, leaving the 6-foot-2 defender without a club team overseas after the European summer transfer window shut.

"It's unfortunate that things like that happen," Clavijo said. "It had nothing to do with Gale."

Aside from his inclusion on the U.S. U-20 squad during the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland and the Cuadrangular Internacional Tournament in Peru, Agbossoumonde's recent game action has been pretty limited. His long layoff is nearing its conclusion, though, as Clavijo said a move is imminent.

In the meantime, Agbossoumonde is at Portugal's newfound hotbed for American soccer, Liga de Honra side G.D. Estoril Praia, where he is not registered on the roster, but is training with fellow on-loan Miami FCers Greg Garza, Bryan Arguez and Tony Taylor. Miami and Estoril are part of the Traffic Sports ownership family, hence the mass connection between the two.

Agbossoumonde, who is still under contract with Miami FC, will train with Estoril until his move is finalized. Clavijo said he'll likely be joining a team in the Liga Intercalar, a reserve league in Portugal to which the transfer window does not pertain. Many of the upper-echelon teams in Portugal submit squads composed mostly of younger players into the league. The temporary move will provide a chance for Agbossoumonde to see some much-needed minutes, regardless if they don't come in a top-tier division.

"We're excited for him," Clavijo said. "We need to get him in a place where he'll have games. He needs to compete every week."

As for the Americans who did compete this past week, five put their names on the scoresheet, including three World Cup participants. Here is how they and the rest of the Americans Abroad fared (season statistics encompass all competitions):
