The first trailer for Patriots Day, Mark Wahlberg's film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, has been released.

Wahlberg stars in the film as Boston police officer Sgt. Tommy Saunders, a fictional character who looks to portray the actions of officers that were on site to assist after the terrorist attacks. Wahlberg consulted with the families of several people that were affected by the bombings including the Richards family, whose eight-year-old son Martin was killed in one of the blasts near the finish line.

The film was directed by Peter Berg, who also directed the hit television show Friday Night Lights. It also stars Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman. Alex Wolff, 18, will appear in the film as convicted bomber DzhokharTsarnaev.

Some of the footage seen in the trailer was filmed during the 2016 Boston Marathon.

Another Boston Marathon film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as survivor Jeff Bauman is expected to be released next year. Patriots Day will be released on Jan. 13, 2017.
