This is a rematch of last year's inaugural South Division Championship, which the Stallions won 31-17 on their way to claiming the first USFL title. The Stallions have been just as dominant in Year 2 and are the top overall seed in the playoffs, while the Breakers finished one game back in the standings after finishing the season by winning each of their final three games.

In the regular season this year, the Breakers and Stallions split their two meetings. New Orleans came up with a high-scoring 45-31 win in Week 3 as part of their 4-0 start. They then lost three games in a row, including a 24-20 defeat at the hands of the Stallions in Week 7. That game is New Orleans' most recent loss.
The winner of this game will face the Pittsburgh Maulers in the 2023 USFL Championship next week. Both teams won their lone head-to-head matchup against Pittsburgh this year.
