Formula 1 returns to Japan for the first time since 2019 for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. Drivers' preparation continues on Friday with their second practice session on the Suzuka International Racing Course. The circuit is a 3.608-mile figure-eight — one of just two licensed for Formula 1 racing along with Italy's Circuito di Fioriano — and drivers enjoy its old-school design. The track dates to 1962 and, built as a test track for Honda, it hosted its first Formula 1 race in 1987. The circuit features 18 turns and a three-quarter-mile straight on the back of the course that crosses an overpass over the front section.

Sergio Pérez of Red Bull picked up his fourth career F1 victory last weekend in Singapore, at least delaying the world championship celebration of teammate Max Verstappen. Verstappen, the defending Formula 1 champ, leads Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 104 points with just five races remaining.
If Verstappen wins on Sunday and claims the extra point for the fastest lap, he will clinch the title. Without the bonus point, Leclerc would have to finish second to remain in contention. Pérez is eliminated with a win by his teammate.
Without a win, Verstappen can claim the title by outscoring Leclerc by at least eight points. The top 10 finishers are awarded points as such: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, with the bonus point awarded to the fastest lap, provided the driver is in the top 10 finishers.
