Play was suspended again in the second round of the DS Automobiles Italian Open like it was in the first round due to fading light. That did not stop Rory McIlroy from going from in the hunt to in the lead, though, as he finished the first 36 holes at nine-under-par and with a one-stroke lead over the field entering the weekend. He is coming off a win at the PGA Championship, his third win on the PGA Tour as he seeks his fourth win on the DP World Tour this year. He is currently in first place, making a win this weekend a huge statement to the rest of the standings.

McIlroy won the DP World Tour overall three times, first in 2012 and then back-to-back in 2014 and 2015. He then went on to win the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour in 2016, 2019 and 2022 making him the most decorated active golfer on either tour.
He built out his lead in the second round with six birdies and an eagle, with three bogeys for balance.
In the first round, McIlroy went for four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys showing he is heating up as the tournament grows long.
Matt Fitzpatrick is one stroke behind the lead at eight under par, Tyrrell Hatton is four strokes back and Viktor Hovland is falling out of the hunt at six strokes back entering today.
