The Red Sox trailed Kansas City 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth before pushing across two runs on a bases-loaded walk to Alex Verdugo and an RBI single from J.D. Martinez to take a 2-1 victory, spoiling a gem by Royals starter Jonathan Heasley, who allowed only two hits in just under seven innings.
Boston will go with veteran lefty Rich Hill on Saturday. The 42-year-old Boston-area native is 7-6 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.325 WHIP in 22 starts and has worked 102-and-two-third innings. Hill got the win on Sunday at Baltimore by fanning seven in five shutout frames.
Right-hander Brady Singer is next in the rotation for Kansas City. He is 8-4 in 24 appearances and 21 starts with a 3.21 ERA and 1.144 WHIP in 134.2 innings. Singer worked seven scoreless innings to beat the Tigers on Sunday.
