The New York Mets are starting to build their lead in the NL East again. The Atlanta Braves are the closest team in the race to the Mets and they have lost three in a row. Atlanta also has the task of playing Philadelphia who is likely playoff-bound while New York has an easier path facing off against the Oakland Athletics in this series. The Mets have won four of their last five and will go for this series victory today.

While the Braves lost badly 9-1 against the Phillies on Friday, the Mets won just as dominantly beating the A's 9-2 in the series opener. The Mets night was fueled with plenty of offense and was highlighted by Eduardo Escobar hitting his first-ever grand slam to put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. The A's didn't score until the seventh inning. Much of that had to do with the dominance of Chris Bassitt who went eight strong innings while only giving up two runs.
The Mets will look for a similar performance tonight when they start their ace Jacob deGrom. Earlier in the month, deGrom tied the record of 39 straight starts while only giving up three earned runs or fewer. He has a great chance of extending that streak here tonight. The A's will counter with Ken Waldichuk who is 0-2 with a 7.13 ERA.
