The Phillies have a slim lead over Milwaukee for the last playoff spot in the NL and have a game in hand over the Brewers. Washington has the worst record in baseball and will miss the postseason for the third straight season since winning the only World Series title in franchise history in 2019. Philadelphia is trying to get to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

On Friday afternoon, Rhys Hopkins belted a first-inning home run and later drove in a run with a single in the ninth as the Phillies beat the Nationals 5-1. The teams were slated to play a doubleheader on Friday, but the nightcap was rained out and moved to Saturday night. Washington's lone run scored on a single by Luis García in the seventh.
The Nationals will go with veteran right-hander Aníbal Sánchez in Saturday's opener. In 13 starts. the 38-year-old is 3-6 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.244 WHIP in 64.1 innings. Sánchez worked five scoreless innings at Miami on Sunday to get a win.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson gets the call for Philadelphia. The 34-year-old is 10-7 in 30 starts with a 4.84 ERA and 1.324 WHIP in 161.2 innings. He has allowed 12 runs in his last two starts, taking a no-decision against the Braves on Sunday.
