Both teams had Thursday off, with Houston salvaging the final game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday with a 2-1 walkoff win. Mauricio Dubón singled home the winning run in the ninth after Jeremy Peña tied the game with an RBI double in the eighth. The Royals closed a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians at home on Wednesday with a 6-2 victory. Nelson Velázquez got Kansas City off to a fast start with a three-run bomb in the first inning while Angel Zerba worked five-and-one-third scoreless innings in relief of veteran Zack Greinke to earn the win.
Outfielder Michael Brantley missed the entire Baltimore series with a sore right shoulder and is considered day-to-day. The Royals pushed back a self-imposed end-of-September deadline to decide on a location for their new stadium. The team has played at Kauffman Stadium since 1973.
