Qualifying for the first race of the NASCAR Xfinity Racing Series playoffs, the Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway, is set for Friday afternoon ahead of the race later in the evening. But many eyes will be on the No. 88 car as Dale Earnhardt Jr. returns to competitive racing for the first time in more than a year. Earnhardt, one of the owners of JR Motorsports, will get back in an Xfinity car for the first time since April 2022. It marks the 27th season Earnhardt will compete in NASCAR's second-tier circuit, dating back to 1996. Bristol is a challenging track upon which to return, a concrete half-mile oval with steep banking and not a lot of space to run.

With the points reset for the start of the Round of 12, John Hunter Nemechek comes to Bristol with a 10-point lead over Austin Hill after winning a series-high six races during the regular season. That win total includes last weekend's victory at Kansas, with Parker Kligerman claiming the final spot in the field of 12 with a fourth-place run.
There are eight race winners in the playoffs along with the top four finishers in points that did not win a race. Hill won four times, Justin Allgaier, Cole Custer and Sam Mayer were all two-time winners, while Chandler Smith, Sammy Smith and Jeb Burton each took one checkered flag. Josh Berry, Sheldon Creed and Daniel Hemric joined Kligerman to round out the 12-driver playoff race.
Noah Gragson, who moved up to the NASCAR Cup Series after last season, won at Bristol last September, topping Brandon Jones by 0.145 seconds. The race is 300 laps (159.9 miles), with Stages 1 and 2 covering 85 laps each and the final stage made up with the final 130 laps.
