Mikko Rantanen recorded the only score in the shootout on Monday to lift the Avs to a 3-2 victory at Dallas. Alex Newhook's fourth goal of the season put Colorado up 2-1 2:06 into the third period, but the Stars got the equalizer with 26 seconds left in regulation. Cale Makar had the other goal for the Avalanche.
The Canucks squandered a 4-2 third-period lead at Vegas on Monday, losing 5-4. Bo Horvat scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season in the loss while Quinn Hughes was the game's second star with two assists from his spot on the blue line.
This is the first of three meetings this season between the teams, with Vancouver holding a 55-49-20 edge since the Avalanche moved to Denver from Quebec City in 1995. Colorado was 2-1 in the series last season.
