Dodgers, Mets Begin Potential NLCS Preview

Plus, Premier League action and more from the first round at the U.S. Open.

Serena Williams won last night in straight sets, which means we get at least one more singles match at a Grand Slam tomorrow in the second round. Action at the U.S. Open should be awesome to watch for the next two weeks, and I can’t wait for more today.

Tonight’s headliner, though, comes in Major League Baseball, where we get a potential postseason preview in a showdown between the Mets and Dodgers. Plus, the Orioles somehow keep winning and will get their crack at Cleveland tonight as their playoff push continues.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

trea-turner

The teams with the two best records in the National League face off in this huge midweek series starting tonight. There are so many reasons why this could be an NLCS preview: The Mets have their dominant pitching staff with two aces at the top, while the Dodgers just keep hitting and have won at historic rates in the last two months despite some blows to their pitching depth. The series will open with Taijuan Walker on the bump for the Mets against Andrew Heaney, who has been a nice surprise for Dave Roberts and the Dodgers so far.

• Baltimore Orioles at Cleveland Guardians | The improbable Orioles just keep winning, defying the odds thanks to a recipe detailed by Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci earlier this week. But Baltimore remains two games out of the last playoff spot in the AL, so wins are a must. 6:10 p.m. ET, Bally Sports Great Lakes/MASN, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

Everton at Leeds United

Leeds has developed something of a cult following in the United States because of the American influence on its roster: Manager Jesse Marsch and key contributors Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams are all from the U.S. Aaronson and Adams are expected to be fixtures on the USMNT in the World Cup later this year, and both have taken well to Premier League competition so far. Can Leeds get three points today against an Everton side that hasn’t shown many signs of improvement after a dreadful 2021–22 campaign?
