Federer Teams Up with Nadal at the Laver Cup for Final Match of Career

Plus, Judge’s chase for No. 61, Pujols’s 700-club push and an ACC football clash.

Happy Friday! It’s officially the first weekend of fall, and we’ve got a busy day in sports ahead. The headliner is the emotional farewell to Roger Federer as he brings his career to a close, but we’ve also got golf, soccer, college football and potentially some history to make in Major League Baseball.

That’s not a bad way to kick off a fall football weekend. Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

Laver Cup: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal vs. Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe

It’s Roger Federer’s final competitive tennis match of his storied career, and he’s teaming up with one of his toughest adversaries for a last hurrah. Federer’s mark on the sport’s history is a distinct one, as Jon Wertheim wrote in the immediate aftermath of Federer’s announcement. Emotions will surely run high in this one, but there’s certainly something poetic about sharing the court with Nadal one more time: this time as teammates, not friendly foes.

The highly anticipated doubles match is the second match of the night session. The first features Andy Murray against Alex de Minaur, beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

• UEFA Nations League: England at Italy | England has struggled lately in World Cup prep, but there’s a known quality that comes with a side that made the semifinals of the last World Cup and the final at the most recent Euros. • Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees | Aaron Judge came up a few feet short of a walk-off home run that would have made history last night, but the Yankees did win in extra innings to clinch a playoff spot. • St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers | The Cardinals finally got off the schneid yesterday, ending a stretch in which they had scored just one run in 44 innings with a late surge past the Padres yesterday. Now, can the Cards regain some momentum against baseball’s best team? Albert Pujols is still chasing home run No. 700 for his career and will face lefty Andrew Heaney in his return to L.A. today. 10:05 p.m. ET, Apple TV+

HIDDEN GEM:

College football: Virginia at Syracuse

Syracuse is off to a surprise 3–0 start after last week’s last-second win over Purdue, and now the Orange go for a second ACC win of the season against 2–1 Virginia. Syracuse has been fun to watch this season as former UVA offensive coordinator Robert Anae has brought new flavor to an offense that has a star at running back in Sean Tucker and a veteran QB in Garrett Shrader.
