With the AL East Clinched, Judge Goes for 61

Plus, the NL East race is coming down to the wire.

We’ve got one week left in the MLB season, and there’s still plenty of drama ahead!

Most playoff races have been settled, though the last NL wild-card spot is up for grabs and seeding is very much still up for debate. Tonight, we’re locked in on the NL East race, with the Mets and Braves tied atop the division. Plus, Aaron Judge is still pushing for his record-setting home runs.

Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

Aaron Judge

Can the Blue Jays actually throw Aaron Judge some strikes today? With the baseball world watching as Judge hunts his 61st and 62nd home runs of the season, the Jays walked Judge four times yesterday. Those free pases helped the Yanks win 5–2 and clinch the AL East title. With New York’s playoff seed essentially locked up, the only thing worth watching for now is Judge’s home run chase. Toronto does have home field advantage in its first playoff series on the line, though, and beating Gerrit Cole tonight would certainly help matters.

LINEUP:

• Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals | Two home runs from Ronald Acuña Jr. lifted the Braves to a victory last night, pushing the NL East race back into a tie with just seven games left. If Atlanta does win the division, it will be because of its dominance of bottom-feeders like the Nats, against whom the Braves are 14–4 this season. 7:05 p.m. ET, Bally Sports South/MASN/MLB Network, watch on fuboTV

• Miami Marlins at New York Mets | It’s critical for the Mets’ World Series hopes that they find a way to win the NL East, given how their playoff pitching rotation shakes out. That makes pretty much every game down the stretch feel like a must-win, especially considering how well the Braves have played lately. 7:10 p.m. ET, Bally Sports Florida/SNY, watch on fuboTV

• Women’s volleyball: Northwestern at No. 7 Minnesota | Big Ten volleyball is a blast. Northwestern started 11–1, the best opening stretch in program history, before losing twice last weekend. Can the Wildcats pull the upset tonight against a top-10 Golden Gophers team? 9 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

Women’s volleyball: No. 6 Ohio State at Michigan

Rivalry games are fun in any sport, and OSU vs. Michigan always matters. It has extra meaning in volleyball, given where both teams stand nationally and in the incredibly deep Big Ten. The Buckeyes have an impressive résumé with wins over Georgia Tech and Louisville but lost a heartbreaker in five sets to Nebraska over the weekend. Meanwhile, Michigan got a huge top-10 win over Penn State on Saturday.
