The Red Bulls are holding steady as a likely playoff team in the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference standings with 37 points on ten wins and seven draws. New York snapped a two-match losing streak against D.C. United before the break, while Orlando City is looking to leapfrog the Chicago Fire for the seventh and final playoff spot in the East at 30 points this season.
In their last match before the MLS All-Star break, New York’s defense returned to form by playing last-place D.C. United to a scoreless draw. On the one hand, the story of the match was the Red Bulls’ struggles to break through on offense. Despite a 13-4 shot advantage over Wayne Rooney’s squad, the Red Bulls couldn’t get past a D.C. United defense that blocked seven of those attempts. New York’s defense did recover from allowing 10 combined goals in their previous two matches.
As for Orlando City, it was stunned at home by a struggling Revolution side in a 3-0 victory for visiting New England last Saturday night. Matt Polster opened the scoring for the Revs, who were previously winless in six straight games before breaking through against Orlando.
The Red Bulls look to keep pace in a crowded Eastern Conference while Orlando City is inching closer to securing a spot in the MLS playoffs when the two sides square off on Saturday night.
