The back-to-back World Cup champion United States women's national team returns to action against Nigeria on Saturday.

After locking up their positions in both the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics, the U.S. women’s national team hits the pitch for an international friendly against Nigeria for the first of two matches in four days. With 21 of the 23 players on the roster that captured the CONCACAF women's championship in Mexico, head coach Vlatko Andonovski has an opportunity to test the depth of his squad. Today’s match is the second meeting between the countries in two years and just the second time in a friendly having met four times previously in the women’s World Cup and once in the Olympics.

Aside from a 7-1 win in the first-ever meeting between the teams in group play at the 1999 women’s World Cup and a 5-0 victory for the Americans in the 2003 World Cup group stage, the majority of the meetings between these two countries have been tightly contested.

The USA defeated Nigeria 3-1 at the 2000 Olympics and registered a pair of 1-0 group stage wins over the Super Falcons at both the 2007 and 2015 World Cups.

Through 12 games in 2022, the USWNT has had 24 goals scored by players under the age of 24. Over the course of 2019, 2020 and 2021 – a total of 57 games – the USWNT had a combined total of 10 goals scored by players under the age of 24.

Nigeria comes into today 46th in the FIFA world rankings. The Super Falcons finished fourth in WAFCON, punching their ticket to next year’s World Cup.

Nigeria is by far the most successful women’s national team in Africa, having won the continental title 11 times and appeared in every women’s World Cup ever.
