Czech ice hockey great Vlastimil Bubnik dies at 83

PRAGUE (AP) Vlastimil Bubnik, a potent forward for the Czechoslovakia ice hockey and football teams, has died.

His former hockey club, Kometa Brno, says Bubnik died on Tuesday. The cause of death was not given.

The right winger was named the best forward at the 1961 world ice hockey championship, and led Czechoslovakia to bronze at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. He won one silver and two bronze medals with the national team at the worlds.

Bubnik scored 121 goals in 127 internationals, and netted 300 goals in 330 matches in the Czechoslovak hockey league.

In football, he was on the Czechoslovakia team that claimed the bronze at the 1960 European Championship, and scored four goals in 11 internationals.

Bubnik was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1997.
