US beats Egypt to stay in 1st place at volleyball World Cup

HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) The United States stayed in first place on Sunday with a comfortable 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 win over Egypt at the men's volleyball World Cup.

Taylor Sandor scored 14 points while Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell added 11 each as the U.S. improved to 5-0 for 15 points.

Poland rallied from a set down to beat Venezuela 25-27, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 and also has a 5-0 record but trails the U.S. by one point due to fewer sets won. David Konarski led Poland with 22 points.

In other matches, Argentina beat Tunisia 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 to improve to 3-2.

Defending champion Russia improved to 4-1 with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 win over Iran to stay in third place while Italy beat host Japan 25-21, 25-20, 25-15.

Canada defeated Australia in a lengthy encounter, winning 32-34, 25-14, 25-21, 27-29, 20-18.

Two berths for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are available in the 12-nation tournament that runs to Sept. 23.
